Fountain Chemicals
What can you do if your OUTSIDE water feature' or
fountain water turns
green?
First you have to understand why it turns green. Small
organisms called algae start to multiply and grow in the water, they feed
from the nutrients in the water and use sunlight to help this process.
If you can remove the sunlight, this is the safest
option. It is easy to do.
Do not have your feature or fountain in direct sunlight.
Do not have all the water exposed to sunlight, this can
be done if you have a sump with a lid and only the moving water is
exposed. It should also be noted that it is NOT because the water is
moving that it does not turn green, it will, it will just take
considerably longer.
If it is possible you should empty the water and replace
it with clean fresh water.
There is a "last resort"
You can add "Chlorine" or "Bromine"
tablets which are available from any good swimming pool supply company.
This is for fountain use only.
Please bear in mind that these will also kill anything living in the water
including fish, and since the algae which turned the water green is living, it will kill that too.
Please bear in mind that if you do use either of the
above you should also use a test kit to check the water.
How do commercial fountains do it?
They have a pump chamber, and often there will be
an automatic "dosing system" which adds the correct amount of chemicals as
and when required.
NEVER overdose the pool, and always keep any chemicals
away from children.
Warning:
Always read the instructions.
We can not be held responsible for what you actually do.

Here are two jars of tap water. The jar on the right has part of
a "chlorine pill" in it. They are sitting in sunlight. We will
photograph them again in a few weeks. This was taken on 2 08 08 |

Here are the same two jars as you can see the one one with no
"chlorine pill" has turned green. This picture was taken 20 09 08
(The "chlorine pill" dissolves over time which is why you can't see
it) |
