Long pipe fountain
Sometimes you may want to have a remote pump but use a
flexible hose, it works for watering your garden, so why no a fountain?
Well below is what happens

Small pump, nozzle, no hose |

Small pump, nozzle with hose |
This is because the pump can only pump to its maximum
capacity (Which it is doing in the left picture) by adding the hose the
pump has more distance to pump to, but since it is already running at its
maximum the only thing that can happen is the water flow reduces.
If the hose is considerably higher than the pump another
problem occurs, that of maximum head height. A pump can only pump to a
maximum height, If the hose outlet is higher than the maximum head height
no water will flow at all. Also as the hose gets higher and higher the
less water can be pumped to this height.
So what can be done? The way round the above problems
are to use a bigger pump and wider hose, the actual requirements depend on
the above various factors.
