Water feature pump too powerful?

Is your pump too powerful for your water feature?  what can you do, and what happens if it is too powerful?

But why is too powerful wrong?

As the pictures and clips show instead of just ruining over the sides the water swirls about all over the place which is not the desired effect, also when it fills the water shoots strait up, not filling the pot

Ideally you should turn the pump down, but if you are using an existing pump and it has no control  for water flow you can do the following

  Here is a typical pot feature, to "calm the water" put a layer of stones around the inlet hose
     
  Finally put a heavy stone on the other stones. This way there is a gap under the big stone (The other stones are supporting it)

If you just put a big stone on the inlet the pressure may move it.

     
  Here is the feature as it should look like. The water gently runs over the sides
     
  Here is the feature with no stones. You can see the water is splashing everywhere
