What size pump for a remote fountain?
What size pump for a remote fountain is something we get
asked about a couple of times a year. The answer is always "For a remote
fountain you need a pump that can pump ............."
No, we are not being awkward or "funny" but we do not
have enough information to say any more about the fountain.
O.K, try this. From the question above, can you tell how
big the fountain jet is? do you know how far away the pump is? do you know
why the pump is to be remote? do you know how big the pool is? Of course
you don't and neither do we, but that is a typical "what size pump for
remote fountain" question.
What follows is information that will assist you, if you
want to ask that question.
As with any fountain the pump required depends on the
nozzle to be used and its water demand. So we need to know the water
demand of the nozzle. We also need to know the diameter of the pool, as
often people do not take into consideration water splash. Then we
need to know how far away the pump is to be and is it higher or lower than
the fountain. We need to know this to work out the pipe size. Then we like
to ask "why, have a remote pump?" Having a remote pump costs more because
the pump has to be big, the cost of the remote pipework x 2, since there
has to be a flow pipe and a return pipe. Most fountains have the pump
situated in the pool, or in a sump in the pool, which means no external
pipework, no path or road excavation to lay the pipes.
