Tiered water feature too slow?
Have you got a tiered water feature similar to either of
those shown below, and you would like it to have faster flowing
water and may be a jet of 3 or 4 feet from the top, how can you do it?
Please read on.
Let us break the requirements down.
Faster flowing water, taller possibly foaming jet on
top.
To have faster flowing water you will need a bigger pump
that also has the same outlet size as the existing feature. Most of these
type of features only have a small space for a pump, so if your feature
has only a small cavity for a pump sorry its not going to happen.
But if you have a large space for a pump and you get one
that fits you can still have a taller jet on the top cant you? O.K. You
buy a foaming nozzle, how are you going to connect it? and how will you
connect it if the pipe is smaller than the nozzle inlet? Usually with
these features the top of the outlet pipe is flush or just below the top
piece (Depending on which you have it could be a pineapple, a "flower" or
similar ) Without a nozzle the water will not go vertical and there for it
will not evenly flow over your feature.
But if you can get a pump that fits, and you can attach
a nozzle can you still do it? Well not really because the height of the
water jet will now be higher than the catchment pool or basin is, so as
the water splashes it will fall outside of this catchment area and it will
empty the feature causing the pump to burn out. This is actually known as
the JW rule After reading all the above,
we have not forgotten that sometimes it can be done as shown below

The difference with this feature is, the pump is sitting
in the raised brickwork area (Lots of room) and the whole feature is
sitting in a pool that is just big enough to catch the water.
The truth is most tiered features are not designed to
have more than a gentle flow of water, which is why its not a good idea to
try and pump more water than it was designed to hold. If you also notice
all of these features have either small pipes piercing the bowl or they
have a pre shaped lip at regular intervals. Both of these "ideas"
are to allow the water to fall within the perimeter of the receiving bowl.
