Water feature maintenance

Water feature maintenance is to keep  a water feature working and looking good. This is a guide on how to maintain your water feature.

First thing is to turn off (best to unplug) your water feature

Remove any loose things such as decorative gravel, (This way they can not fall into the sump) now remove the statue or rock, now remove the pump. It is best to empty the sump, this can be done by either siphoning the water out or attach a short hose to the pump and pump the water out, but this is not always a good idea since you will no doubt not be able to empty 100% of the water.

Any water that is left should be removed, a small container is good, or if space allows a plastic dustpan. The reason for this is you should remove any "gravel" or other small objects which could damage your pump.

When the sump is empty rise it with clean water and remove this water as described above. Your sump should now be nice and clean. If you have algae you may want to use bleach and a brush to remove this.

Check any pipes for kinks / blockages / damage, if damaged it is often easier to change the pipe for one with the same dimensions

Now its time to clean the pump, this should be done in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, but basically you take the pump apart and clean everything and check for any signs of wear. You should also check the whole of the pump cable to look for any damage, if it is damaged get a new pump, DO NOT attempt to repair the cable

Once this has all been done you can now put everything back and refill your water feature with tap water, switch the pump on sit back and enjoy.

As previously mentioned this is only a guide, and assumes there is no livestock

Often, a project is never completed because of the unexpected costs. Folk do not always want to hear the truth.
